Systems Not Goals

Last week, I told one of my coaches at Big Thompson Crossfit that my goal was to not set any goals. I'm sure he thought I was being goofy, but I was dead serious. I am such a driven, goal-oriented person that I tend to suck the life out of my efforts in the gym and in the kitchen.

As I am re-entering the world of fitness, I'm trying desperately to ensure that this isn't yet another year that I work to lose 20-30 pounds over the spring and summer only to regain it all over the fall and winter. I also ran across an article on inc. that talked about setting systems and structures in place that will get us to where we want to be without setting an actual goal. This was a huge revelation for me.

I set up an appointment with my coaches with the intention of gaining some accountability for my 'systems'. Here is what we collectively decided on as my 3 month plan (note that they don't look much like goals at all):

Have you recently set some systems in place rather than goals? How is that working for you?

  1. You and I are very much alike in so many ways...except I don't even know where the part of me I lost has gone...she certainly is nowhere in sight. Chronic health issues of many varieties have been plaguing me for too long. Fitness? I'm happy on a day when I can go up and down the stairs without planning ahead, taking everything with me I could possibly need, accomplishing the tasks, and then going back up. Asthma is truly debilitating at times. This sounds like a perfect blog for me to be reading right now, and I'm THRILLED to see that you've signed up for the A-Z Challenge. It's the perfect thing new bloggers to connect within the community and meet new people in a hurry!
As a co-host, I officially welcome you, and want to let you know that one of my roles on the team is to mentor new bloggers, as well as those just new The A-Z Challenge itself. Therefore, if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know at my personal email (found in the contact us tab). However, we highly recommend you read all the pages of info at the main blog, and especially the FAQ before you ask. This is our fifth year, and we've worked hard to assemble the answers to the main concerns our participants have!

P.S You've GOT to take word verification/captcha/prove I'm not a robot OFF of your blog. It's a "keep out" sign. Most bloggers these days will not comment on a blog which has it. Not allowing anonymous comments, or if you feel you have to, moderate comments, but captcha is going to kill your blog before you even get started. Just a warning. It's in our instructions, too ;-)

    1. Thanks so much for taking the time to look things over for me, Tina. And for the advice. I'll be reading up on the A to Z page as I get things ready for April. Captcha removed- still adjusting to this move from WordPress to Blogger for this new blog. Learning lots, which is fun.

  3. Consistency is key in fitness, as it is in any endeavor. I'm a very goal-oriented person too, and the challenge is to stop, be in the moment and not be so driven as to lose sight of the quality of my daily life.

All the best with your blog!

  5. Welcome to the world of blogging. Visually your blog looks nice. Uncluttered and basic -- I like that look. Doing the A to Z is a great way to develop blogging discipline and build up content for your site. Good luck with it, be enlightened, and have fun.
